Scripture: Ephesians 5:21

Imagine a vast orchestra, instruments poised, waiting for the first note to spark a harmonious symphony. Each violin, cello, and flute, while distinct, submits to the conductor’s direction, creating a unified masterpiece. This is the image evoked by Paul’s call in Ephesians 5:21: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Submission, often misunderstood as weakness, is here presented as a powerful act of love and unity. It’s not about losing oneself or surrendering one’s voice, but about recognizing the beautiful melody each person plays and choosing to harmonize together, creating a symphony rich in respect and love.

But how do we translate this musical metaphor into the realities of life? Here are three practical notes to guide us:

1. Embrace the Interdependence: We are not solo performers in life’s grand play. We are part of a complex ensemble, each with unique contributions. Submission, then, is acknowledging this interdependence, celebrating the strengths and gifts of others, and choosing to support their growth rather than seeking to dominate.

2. Conduct with Humility: Just as a conductor serves the music, not themselves, our submission should be fueled by humility. We seek understanding, prioritize the good of others, and actively listen to the melodies they play. It’s not about blind obedience, but about discerning harmony and contributing our own notes with grace and respect.

3. Harmony Over Ego: Conflicts and disagreements are inevitable in any orchestra. Yet, true submission seeks to resolve these not through ego or power struggles, but through compassion and empathy. We learn to compromise, forgive, and prioritize the unity of the ensemble over individual egos.

Remember:

  • Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, each of you looking to the interests of others.”
  • Romans 12:10: “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

Go forth, dear friend, a maestro of humility, weaving the melodies of respect and love into the tapestry of your relationships. Remember, true submission is not weakness, but the strength it takes to harmonize with others, creating a symphony of unity that resonates far beyond the individual notes. May your life be a song of love, a testament to the beauty found in submitting to the conductor of our hearts, Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Lord, grant us the ears to hear the melodies of others and the humility to submit to the symphony of love You conduct. Teach us to value and respect each instrument, to resolve conflicts with understanding, and to play our own notes with a heart overflowing with compassion and grace. May our lives be harmonious testimonies to the power of mutual submission, creating a beautiful symphony that resonates with Your love and inspires the world around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
