John 12:1-8 (NIV) tells the story of Mary anointing Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume. This act of love and devotion was criticized by Judas, who saw it as a waste of resources that could have been used to help the poor. But Jesus defended Mary, saying, “Leave her aloneā€¦ You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

This passage is a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing and seizing the opportunities we have to show love and devotion to God. Mary understood the significance of Jesus’ presence and chose to honor Him in a way that was meaningful and sacrificial.

In Matthew 26:13 (NIV), Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” This cross-reference emphasizes the lasting impact of Mary’s act of devotion.

Consider the story of a woman who, despite her limited resources, donated a large portion of her income to her church. Many criticized her, saying the money could have been better spent. But like Mary, she understood the value of expressing her love for God in a tangible way.
