Scripture: Romans 7:14-15
In Romans 7:14-15, the Apostle Paul candidly shares his struggles with sin, giving voice to the inner conflict experienced by every believer. He writes, “For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”
Paul’s words resonate with the universal human experience of wrestling with sin and its consequences. Despite his deep desire to live in obedience to God’s law, he finds himself trapped in a cycle of failure and frustration. His admission underscores the reality of the ongoing battle between the flesh and the Spirit within every believer.
The tension Paul describes is one that many of us can relate to. We may earnestly desire to do what is right and pleasing to God, yet find ourselves repeatedly falling short. Our hearts long to follow God’s commandments, but our sinful nature often leads us astray. Like Paul, we feel the weight of our own inadequacy and the struggle against sin’s grip on our lives.
Yet, even in the midst of this struggle, there is hope. Paul’s honesty reminds us that we are not alone in our battle against sin. As believers, we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to empower and guide us. Through His strength, we can overcome the power of sin and live victoriously in Christ.
Heavenly Father, we confess our struggles with sin and our need for your grace. Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit, who empowers us to resist temptation and live in obedience to your will. Help us to rely on your strength each day, knowing that apart from you, we can do nothing. May your Spirit work in us, transforming our hearts and conforming us to the image of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
