1 Corinthians 14:20 (NIV) says, “Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.

In this verse, Paul calls on the Corinthian believers to grow in their spiritual maturity. He encourages them to be innocent regarding evil, like infants, but mature in their thinking. This distinction is crucial for the church’s health and effectiveness. Paul acknowledges that while childlike innocence is valuable in avoiding evil, mature understanding is essential for spiritual growth and discernment.

Childlike faith is often praised in the Bible for its purity and trust, but here Paul emphasizes the need for mature thinking. Maturity involves a deeper comprehension of God’s truths, a balanced perspective, and the ability to discern right from wrong. As believers grow in their faith, they should strive to move beyond superficial understandings and develop a robust, mature relationship with God.

A profound example of mature thinking in the Bible is seen in the life of King Solomon. When Solomon became king, God appeared to him in a dream and asked what he desired. Solomon, recognizing the immense responsibility of leading Israel, asked for wisdom to govern the people justly. In 1 Kings 3:9, he says, “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

Solomon’s request for wisdom over wealth, power, or long life demonstrated his mature understanding of what was truly important. His desire for discernment and understanding pleased God, who granted him unparalleled wisdom. Solomon’s example teaches us the value of seeking mature thinking and discernment in our own lives.
